Research Interests

Dr Katherine Brooke-Wavell conducts research on the influence of physical activity, nutrition and other lifestyle factors on bone health and fall risk,  to increase understanding of potential approaches to reduce risk of osteoporotic fracture.

Current research

Current/recent research is examining

  • Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of primary care exercise interventions on bone health in older people
  • The influence of brief, high impact exercise on bone structure and neuromuscular function in older men
  • Predictors of bone health and stress fracture risk in elite female athletes
  • Acute effects of exercise on bone metabolism
  • vibration training, bone health and fall risk in older people
  • Evaluation of the optimal frequency of exercise for increasing bone strength

A number of previous studies have examined role of exercise, lifestyle and environmental factors in maintaining bone health and reducing fall risk. An intervention study examined effects of exercise on clinical and metabolic parameters in obese young women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Methodological studies have been conducted on ultrasound assessment of skeletal status, physical activity assessment and assessment of human body composition.
Research has been funded by National Osteoporosis Society, Wellcome Trust and Department of Trade and Industry.
