Sociology
Sociology at Loughborough is internationally-recognised, inter-disciplinary, and taught by enthusiastic and committed intellectuals. Our three-year undergraduate Sociology programme is taught in one of Britain’s top ranked Social Science departments. Loughborough students experience a challenging yet supportive environment where both high quality teaching and cutting-edge research are given top priority. Our internationally recognised Sociology staff are committed to top quality teaching. In the 2006 Times Good University Guide, which covers 109 institutions, Sociology at Loughborough University was ranked third in the UK, and in a national assessment of the quality of teaching in universities, the department’s teaching scored 23 points out of a possible 24, making it one of the top rated departments in terms of teaching in the country. Many staff members are international leaders in their research areas and the department has the highest possible research rating of 5*A in the most recent national assessment.
The distinguishing feature of Sociology at Loughborough lies in the interdisciplinary connections that it allows both students and staff. The department of Social Sciences is unique in British universities in its interdisciplinary combination of sociology with communication and media studies, criminology and social policy and social psychology. We offer degrees in each of these disciplines and also offer students opportunities to combine their Sociology programme with selected modules offered by the other programmes. Although the sociology programme enables you to take modules from complementary social science disciplines as well as sociology, if you want to study only sociology you can do so.
All applications to Sociology at Loughborough must be made through UCAS.
Further information about typical offers made to applicants can be found on the Sociology pages of the On-line prospectus.
Students have the opportunity to study abroad under the Erasmus scheme:
ERASMUS Student Exchanges
Sociology students have the opportunity to study abroad under the Erasmus student exchange scheme, which is open to second year students who are EU citizens. The scheme provides you with a grant towards the cost of living and travelling abroad. Sociology currently has exchange agreements with Copenhagen University in Denmark, the University of Bergen in Norway, and University College Dublin in Ireland. All of these universities offer sociology courses taught in English. Other exchange institutions are likely to be added in the near future.
Additional exchange opportunities are currently available either through the Social Sciences Department or Loughborough University. For more information, contact the Sociology Erasmus Coordinator.
The university you visit abroad will assess your academic performance and the marks you obtain will contribute to your Loughborough degree. Sociology students can apply to study abroad for one semester in their second year of study. It is important to start planning your study abroad early, paying particular attention to application deadlines.
