Current Research:
I am currently exploring the ways in which joking operates within Television Situation Comedies (Sitcoms). In particular, my work explores how a joke operates in terms of sequence organization over a number of spoken turns and how it was designed to be not only humorous, but also to perform other functions such as developing certain character types. To explore these issues I am using videos of popular sitcoms, recorded footage of audiences watching/talking about sitcoms and recordings made in production meetings of those responsible for making these comedies.
