Current Research:

I am researching interactions between Chinese and Western teachers in discussion meetings in Chinese schools and universities. The discussion topic is the appropriateness of so-called ‘Western’ pedagogy (and, by implication, ‘Chinese’ pedagogy) for Chinese students. I am especially interested in the ways notions of both culture and nation – together with constructions of the psychology of the Chinese student – are constructed and marshalled in teachers’ accounts and arguments concerning this pedagogic appropriateness.

Research Interests:

Discursive psychology; conversation analysis; the possibilities and limitations of exploring issues of culture, ideology, power, domination and resistance through the analysis of situated talk-in-interaction.
