Academic Biography:

Laura completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Socology at Aston University. She has previously worked at the International Centre for Research in Forensic Psychology at Portsmouth University, the Clinical Division of Psychiatry at the University of Leicester, and the Centre for Child and Family Research at Loughborough University. Since January 2007 Laura has been employed as a full-time lecturer/senior lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, Birmingham City University.

Laura is and active researcher in the areas of forensic psychology and criminal justice, and is Deputy Programme Director of the MSc Forensic Psychology at Birmingham City University. She lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students on criminal and forensic psychology and research methods. Laura also supervises undergraduate and masters level dissertations and postgraduate research degrees (MPhil and PhD) and currently supervises two PhD students.
Laura currently leads a number of funded research projects into the impact of the arts and other ‘alternative’ activities in prisons. During her research career she has been involved in several large and small scale research projects, funded by national government agencies, charities, and local authorities.
Her research interests and experience fall into the following categories:

  • Risk and need assessment
  • Offender rehabilitation
  • Mental health and crime

Laura is regularly invited to speak at academic and professional conferences in the UK and internationally.

PhD Research:

PhD working title: Pathways into crime: Life histories of female offenders.
This research is investigating the pathways into crime taken by women who offend. This research is approved by the Prison Service National Research Committee and utilises a sample of women currently in prison in England, combining in-depth interviews with data from the national Offender Assessment System (OASys).
