The title of my PhD study is,
‘Remembering Bhopal’: Disaster and the Dynamics of MemoryProject Brief:
In its immediate aftermath, the Union Carbide gas leak of 1984 in Bhopal (India) was perceived as an event that exceeded both imagination and articulation. It was a “catastrophe in search of a metaphor” and there were fears that the sheer alienness of its nature and scale would make it subject to a “quick erasure”. On the contrary, in the 25 years since the event the metaphors have proliferated and Bhopal has emerged as a transnational site of memory, the locus of a set of competitive “rememberings”.
In my study I seek to map out and analyse the shifting terrain of remembrance that the disaster has engendered.
