Welcome (back) to Loughborough

 

Arrangements for the start of term (September 2011)

 

New students (including Loughborough Chinese Physics Partnership, ERASMUS, 2plus2, transfers and those who completed the Foundation Year)

  1. University registration: see here.
  2. Departmental registration: Come to W2.21 (first year lab) at 09.15 on Friday, 30 September. Go up the stairs from the main Physics entrance (shown in the picture). Turn right at the top of the stairs and then take the first door on the left. There will be introductory talks on the Department, University facilities and your degree programme for all students, with a chance to meet other students and your tutor. A programme for the day is now available. LAST UPDATED 15 SEPT
  3. The Departmental Handbook and Programme hanndbooks are now available. UPDATED 29 SEPT (You will receive hard copy of these on Induction Day.)
  4. Lectures start at 09.00 on Monday, 3 October.
  5. If you'd like to get in contact with other freshers before you arrive, you can join the "Loughborough Physics Freshers 2011" Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/218918411473875/ .

Returning students

  1. As you may well be aware, Maureen retires on 30 September. Meredith Coney will start as Administrator on Monday, 3 October; her office is W1.84. Vici Webster will be moving to room W1.83.
  2. The results of the SAP will be available on Wednesday, 21 September.
  3. Your timetables are accessible online at http://luis.lboro.ac.uk/apx/f?p=STUDENT_TIMETABLE. UPDATED 29 SEPT Physics lectures on that day will start at 12.00; please note that teaching by other Departments may start at an earlier or later time.
  4. Updated programme regulations for 2011-12 are now available. There are no major changes, but you should read the requirements for your year carefully.
  5. You will have the same Personal Tutor as last year; a list will be on the notice board. Please call in some time in the first fortnight of the term. (There are no academic tutors in part B).
  6. You can find the list of modules you have registered for on Learn. If you would like to change an option for this semester, please do so by Friday, 14 October. You should check with your Programme Tutor whether your choice is suitable. If undecided about your choices, you could (space permitting) attend all the lectures you might be interested in for a week or two. Boris Chesca is the Programme Tutor for joint honours programmes (PHM, PMAN, SSP); John Samson is the Programme Tutor for PH, EPH and PCOS.
  7. Nominations for the Staff Student Committee should be given to John Samson by Friday, 21 October. We need a representative for each year of each degree programme.
  8. Final year project students should contact their supervisor as soon as possible to discuss their project.
  9. Part B students: if you are planning to take a sandwich year, which is highly recommended, you should get in touch with Klaus Neumann (who is responsible for ERASMUS exchange study) or Cyril Alekseev (who is now responsible for industrial placements) fairly soon.

  11. Freshers' Induction Day is Friday, 30 September. If you're around, you're welcome to drop in to the second year lab at about 10.15 to say hello.
  12. The Institute of Physics now offers free online-only membership to physics undergraduates.
