Research Interests

• My research field is the study of the mechanical properties of materials under impact conditions, and the correlation of this dynamic behaviour with the macroscopic and microscopic structure. Two major research techniques have been developed at Loughborough:

1. a Hopkinson bar system for investigating the compressive high strain rate (up to 10,000 per second) behaviour of metals (most recently funded by the DRA), carbon fibre composites (with support from ICI), and polymers.
2. an exploding wire method for studying the tensile behaviour of polymers at very high strain rate (above 10,000 per second).
