Graeme is a Research Engineer with the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology at Loughborough University studying for an Engineering Doctorate in Systems Engineering. His research interests include the application of systems engineering tools and techniques to understanding how the flexible demand of electrical energy can be used to enable the penetration of renewable energy into conventional electrical supply systems. The aims of his research are to identify ways in which market organisation and consumer behaviour can be incentivised to adopt flexible demand as a means of minimising the carbon intensity of electrical production and consumption. He is co-sponsored by the EPSRC and E.ON.
Prior to joining the EngD programme Graeme completed his MSc with Loughborough in Renewable Energy Systems Technology also at CREST. His background is in telecommunications having spent nearly 20 years in the industry. Most recently he worked for the industry regulator Ofcom and also worked in a variety of engineering, consulting and commercial roles with Lucent Technologies, Nortel and BT. He also has a MSc in Telecommunications Technology from Aston University. He maintains an interest in communications technology and is also looking at ways in which advanced Information and Communications Technology can enable the mass market penetration of flexible demand.
After graduating from UMIST with a BSc in Electronics Graeme started his career in 1989 at the then British Telecom Research Laboratories undertaking research in the application of artificial intelligence to various commercial applications. After moving within BT to work on passive optical networks he joined Fujitsu before leaving to pursue a MSc in Telecommunications Technology at Aston University.
In 1994 he joined Nortel and worked on the construction of the Energis SDH and ATM core networks. He left Nortel in 1997 and joined Lucent Technologies firstly responsible for traffic engineering the AirLoop wireless local loop system and then pursuing a number of different sales support roles. The last few years at Lucent were spent in the mobile communications group working on UMTS including product managing a successful UMTS data card product.
Graeme left Lucent in 2003 to join Ofcom where he was responsible for providing technical consultancy and directing a number of policy projects. During this time he became increasingly interested in renewable energy and completed through distance learning a MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology at Loughborough University before leaving Ofcom and becoming a full-time Engineering Doctorate student. He is researching the application of flexible demand to the minimisation of the carbon intensity of electricity production and consumption. He is co-sponsored by the EPSRC and E.ON.
Graeme is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the IET.
