Research visit of Professor Arthur Chiou - 6th March 2009

In a recent visit to the University, Professor Arthur Chiou examined the PhD work of Vicente Azorin Peris from the Photonics Engineering and Health Technology Research Group, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. During his visit Professor Chiou also presented his distinctive international research on biophotonics at the invitation of Professor Jeremy Coupland, Optical Engineering Research, Wolfson School.
Professor Chiou is a world renowned expert in biophotonics and is Director of the Biophotonics Interdisciplinary Research Centre at National Yang-Ming University in Taiwan. He is also a member of the SPIE Board of Directors –Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers – which is at the forefront of research into the fundamental science of biophotonics and its applications in a wide range of domains. We were delighted when Professor Chiou agreed to an invitation by Professor Jeremy Coupland to give a seminar to the Optical Engineering Research Group in the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering later in the day. His talk on the use of biophotonics to study micro- and nano-scale biological structures was both inspirational and aspirational.
Vicente Azorin Peris whose work on “Opto-Physiological Modelling of Pulse Oximetry” supervised by Dr Sijung Hu, was examined earlier in the day with Professor Ron Summers who acted as the internal examiner, commented that he was overwhelmed by the depth and breadth of research exhibited by Professor Chiou’s work , which provided him with new goals for his own embryonic career in research.
Perhaps the last word should go to Professor Chiou himself – he indicated in the seminar that he was extremely impressed by what he viewed as leading edge work carried out in the University and that he would welcome future opportunities to collaborate in biophotonics interdisciplinary research with us.
