CREST scores a 'High Five' of Awards for Renewable Energy Research - November 2008

CREST staff members talk about solar panels

Researchers at Loughborough's Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology have won a record number of awards during 2008. Firstly, research student Jake Bowers was a regional winner of the East Midlands Science and Engineering Professionals (EMSEP) Masters Prize for his research into dye sensitised solar cell technology.

Then, during May's IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference in San Diego during May, research student Chris Hibberd won a best poster prize for his work on copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) photovoltaic devices.

Meanwhile, young researcher Martin Bliss won two awards for his development of an LED solar simulator system, the first at the International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference in Fukuoka, Japan in April followed by a prize at this year's PVSAT conference in Bath, UK.

Not to be out-done, PhD student Thanos Mathiopoulos won best poster award for his work on a self-tuned wind turbine drive train damper at the 2008 European Wind Energy Conference in Brussels.

Head of Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Yiannis Vardaxoglou, said "It is gratifying that the excellence of the work of our young researchers is being recognised worldwide. This reflects the level of investment our Department has made in renewable energy research recently, and also helps demonstrate the quality of our research into sustainable energy right across Loughborough University."
