Information and Library Management Programme

 Information and Library Management
MA, MSc, Diploma or Certificate

The Postgraduate Programme in Information and Library Management is a conversion course, being essentially vocational and practical. Nevertheless, it gives students the theoretical knowledge necessary to underpin any aspect of library and information work, building on ICT experience gained in undergraduate study or during pre-programme employment. Students will have a multiplicity of career choices, and the programme ensures that there is a balance between library studies and the emerging information markets that graduates will be able to enter. The programme inculcates a flexible attitude towards problems, thus preparing students not only for a first professional post, but also, with appropriate continuing education, for a career leading to the highest levels of management

Academic and professional objectives

The programme aims to produce graduates who have acquired:

  • an awareness of the role and significance of an information based society, including the economics and dynamics of information in society, between nations, governments, organisations, communities and individuals.
  • an understanding of the professional, managerial and technical dimensions of librarianship and other information work
  • the core skills required to obtain a first professional post in the sector, building on pre-programme experience
  • an understanding of the role and practice of research in the information field
  • the learning and leadership skills needed for further professional development
