Undergraduate Study at Loughborough University

Loughborough University has a strong reputation for being at the forefront of technological research and for maintaining extensive industrial links. In the School of Civil & Building Engineering, which is one of the largest of its type in the UK, our staff have considerable research and professional experience which ensures that our teaching is both up-to-date and relevant to the needs of the Construction and Transport industries.

The School's programmes and graduates have been rated very highly in many assessments over the years and we are consistently placed in the top group of universities for both Civil and Building Engineering. In the 2007 Guardian league tables the School was rated 1st in the UK for Building and 5th for Civil Engineering, and in the Times Good University Guide in 2007 the School was rated 2nd for Building and 6th for Civil Engineering. Also in 2007, and for the second year running, the School was rated 1st in the National Student Survey in both the 'Civil Engineering' and 'Architecture, Building and Planning' subject areas which encompass all our undergraduate degrees, including transport.

The School is ranked 5th in UK for Built Environment and 7th for Civil Engineering in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (as classified under the respective Architecture and Built Environment, and Civil Engineering categories, Grade Point Average x Volume.) Some 25% of the School's Built Environment research is classed as 'world-leading' (rated the maximum 4*) and 95% of the School's Built Environment research and 90% of the School's Civil Engineering research is of an international standard (rated 2*, 3* or 4*).

Civil & Building Labs

In addition to the teaching and research staff, we have a large team of experienced technicians who will be on hand to help you gain the most from our well equipped laboratories and computing facilities. Our School is housed in two adjacent buildings. Our teaching block, which was extensively enlarged and refurbished in 2005/06, contains lecture and tutorial rooms, a computer room, a design studio and common rooms, as well as staff offices, research rooms and meeting rooms. The second building is an open plan laboratory with over 2,000 square metres of floor space. This includes building services, concrete, hydraulics, public health, soil mechanics, strength of materials, structures and surveying laboratories along with support workshops.

In addition to its varied undergraduate programmes of study, our School also offers several internationally recognised postgraduate programmes leading to MSc degrees. We also currently have over ninety full and part-time research students registered for MPhil and PhD degrees.
