PhD Studentships

We regularly recruit for Studentships funded by the Research Councils, the University and industrial companies, to work on specific three year projects leading to the degree of PhD Studentships cover UK/EU tuition fees and pay a maintenance grant of ca £13,000 pa.

Details of current Studentships are shown below, and are open to UK and EU citizens

If you are interested in any of the studentships described, please contact the supervising member of staff, who will be able to supply further details.

PhD Studentships in Radiochemistry

Applications are invited for a number of PhD Studentships in environmental and industrial radiochemistry.
The projects will:
(i) investigate the atomic scale surface structure and chemistry of model systems relevant to geological disposal of nuclear wastes;
(ii) develop a novel class of selective sorbents and sequestering reagents for actinides and heavy metals using surface modified aluminosilicate clays and natural/synthetic zeolites;
(iii) synthesise and test bespoke organic super-plasticizers for cements used in radioactive waste disposal applications;
(iv) characterise radioactive scales (NORM) generated by the onshore oil & gas industry and devise methods for their inhibition and/or remediation;
(v) establish the geochemical controls on uranium mobilization in major sandstone aquifers and the impact on drinking water quality.

These projects will give the successful candidates training in modern radiochemical and synthetic methods together with experience of research relevant to the nuclear, extractive and process industries.

The positions are for 3 years and intended to start in October 2011. The studentships will cover tuition fees and provide a maintenance grant at EPSRC rates (currently £13590 per annum). Applicants, who must be eligible to register as a UK or EU fee paying student, should have, or expect to obtain, an upper second or first class BSc or MChem degree, a Masters degree, or an equivalent qualification in chemistry, natural sciences or a closely related area. A strong interest in undertaking field-based study is essential for projects (iv) and (v) above.

Applications should be submitted on the university research degree application form, which may be completed on-line at:-
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/prospectus/pg/essential/apply/index.htm

Curriculum vitae must be accompanied by a completed application form.

For general enquiries or further details please contact Prof. David Read or Dr Nick Evans, Department of Chemistry, Loughborough University, Loughborough, LE11 3TU, UK. (Email: d.read@lboro.ac.uk orn.d.m.evans@lboro.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is: 31 July 2011
Interviews will take place in the week beginning 15 August.

PhD Studentships: Graduate School Studentship Competition 2011

A number of fully funded PhD studentships will be available to start in October 2011 in the Department of Chemistry at Loughborough University. The studentships will cover tuition fees for UK/EU students and will provide a maintenance grant at Research Council rates (ca £13590 pa).

Studentships will be available in all branches of the subject including:

  • analytical chemistry

  • environmental chemistry

  • structural and synthetic inorganic

  • organic and materials chemistry

  • physical chemistry

  • radiochemistry

Projects will focus on applications in four main research theme, and may involve collaborations with other departments or institutions:

  • Health

  • Energy

  • Environment

  • Crime and Security

The department possesses excellent facilities for research including 400 and 500 MHz NMR, high resolution mass spectrometry, ICP-MS, HPLC, elemental analysis and three X-ray diffractometers. Research is conducted in modern laboratories and the university has recently invested in the department with new professorial, lecturer and research fellow appointments.

Candidates with a strong interest in research, and who have, or expect to obtain a first or upper second class degree (or its equivalent) in chemistry or a closely related discipline should apply using the Research On-line Application at:-
