Message from the Head of Department

" I would like to welcome you all to the Department of Chemistry!

This year we have had a large number of visit days and university open days and have science summer schools to look forward to for prospective students, their parents and friends. I would like to thank all the staff and students who make these important events so useful for our visitors and such great fun for all. It is thanks to their efforts that we can truly claim to be a friendly university, and we can show visitors that we have a superb campus with terrific student facilities including fully-furbished halls of residence, high quality teaching labs, seminar rooms and lecture theatres, state-of-the-art sports facilities and the fantastic Students' Union Building.

Loughborough University is a centre of excellence in teaching and learning and we have much to be proud of. Physical Science (Departments of Chemistry and Physics) at Loughborough University was rated the highest scoring subject of any institution in the country for student satisfaction (The Guardian 2005). The Chemistry department recently underwent a review by QAA (Quality Assurance Agency), and received the highest available commendation for its teaching quality. Published league tables in national newspapers such as The Times Good University Guide (2005) place us among the top universities in the UK . This is a great credit to the efforts that everyone puts in to make our lectures, workshops, laboratory classes and research projects of the highest quality. The skills, knowledge and abilities you pick up as part of your degree programme, provided by the Chemistry department, are highly prized in the graduate job market; Loughborough is consistently ranked among the very best universities for graduate employment and has strong links with industry and the professions.

Finally, last year saw a very high number of students achieving First Class degrees, we congratulate them and look forward to this years results. Thanks to all for making this year a memorable year and we should all be looking forward to a new academic year and the satisfaction and achievements that it will bring."
