Spin-out profile: AXILICA
Axilica provides software that for the first time allows the design of computer chips to be carried out entirely using software, enabling computer chip based products to be brought to market more quickly, easily and cost efficiently.
BACKGROUND
Axilica was formed in 2007 by IPSO Ventures to commercialise technology developed in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University. Axilica has developed a unique electronic design automation (EDA) software programme which simplifies and speeds up the process of designing computer chips. The technology uses model-based techniques to greatly increase designer productivity when implementing electronic systems.
PRODUCT
Axilica’s EDA software product is designed to address the increasing demand for easier, faster ways to upgrade and enhance electronic consumer products. It will not only speed up the design process, but will allow it to be carried out with little or no knowledge of front-end hardware design. This means that for the first time software designers can design computer chips. The reduced development cost and shorter timescales will enable chip design companies to reap the benefits of increased profit margins and faster times to market for their products.
With Axilica's tool-set, designs can be simulated or immediately realised in hardware at any stage in the process – whether it's the rapid prototyping of a high-level design, or the realisation of a complete hardware/software system-on-chip. The technology integrates with existing electronic design flows and also supports the generation of transaction-level models for high-speed simulation.
FORWARD STRATEGY
The product has been successfully trialled with customers and will be released at the beginning of 2009.
