The University has 21 academic departments and over 40 research centres and institutes.

The most senior staff at the University are its Officers. Loughborough's Chancellor - the formal principal officer - is Sir Nigel Rudd, who presides over meetings of the University Court. The Chancellor is also an ex-officio member of the University Council and confers degrees on its graduates.

The day-to-day running of the University is the responsibility of the Vice Chancellor, who is the academic and executive head. In 2006 Professor Shirley Pearce CBE became the University's seventh Vice Chancellor.

The Vice Chancellor works closely with the Academic Leadership Team comprised of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, three Pro Vice Chancellors, the Academic Registrar, a Chief Operating Officer, Director of Finance and the ten School Deans.

The University Court is a body of externally appointed representatives which meets annually. It links the University to the local and national community through its predominantly lay membership.

The University Council is the chief executive body, responsible for the University's finances, buildings and land. It is the official employer of all staff and meets several times a year. Its Chairman is the Senior Pro Chancellor, Sir Peter Bonfield.

The University Senate is responsible for the academic work of the University, including programmes, examinations, teaching and research quality. Its membership is drawn from the University and it meets five or six times a year.
